The Great Conjunction of 2020 is only visible for around 2 hours

We are about to witness/experience the closest Great Conjunction (of Jupiter and Saturn) of 457 years. The last time Jupiter and Saturn came this close was in 1623 and they won’t come this close again till 2080. 

But we have only maybe at best 2 hours to see it for ourselves, provided weather conditions are favourable. For good view, maybe just 1 hour to do it. This is because Jupiter and Saturn are very close to the Sun in the sky; separated by roughly only 30 degree arc of the ecliptic sky. So it won’t be visible during the day, and we don’t have much time after the sun sets to see it before it too disappears below the horizon following the sun. 

So how and when do we go about doing it?

Firstly, look for an unobstructed view of the western horizon. If you are using a compass,  it’s closer to WSW on the compass. You should be able to see the Great Conjunction (of Jupiter and Saturn coming together) above the western horizon as the sky darkens after the sun sets. It will be just below the constellation of Capricorn and above the constellation of Sagittarius.

The time window to view it is roughly half hour after sunset to 2.5 hours after sunset. That gives us roughly 2 hours to view the best Great Conjunction of many lifetimes. Given that the sky can still be bright up to 1 hour after sunset, we have maybe 1 to 1.5 hours to get a good view in dark night sky.

So set a reminder/alarm, and don’t miss out on the best Great Conjunction in 457 years.
